How to Stop the “Infinite Workday” From Infiltrating Your Team

How to Stop the “Infinite Workday” From Infiltrating Your Team

It slowly creeps in. We start checking our email at 6 am while making our coffee. We reply to a Slack message while watching TV at 9 pm. It feels like we’re just staying on top of things and being responsive (being a good leader).

But when we look at our team, we can notice the same tendencies.

We are living in the era of the “infinite workday.” The traditional expectations of 9-to-5 have either disappeared or faded for many businesses. We think we’re going above and beyond, but actually, we're creating a culture that destroys focus, kills creativity, and drives our best employees away.

The 6am - 10pm Loop

If it feels like your team is working longer hours than ever before, the data agrees with you.

According to a recent analysis of Microsoft 365 usage, the average user now sends or receives more than 50 messages outside of working hours. Even more worrisome, 4 in 10 global employees admit to checking their work email immediately upon waking up.

As the workday bleeds into the morning, it also bleeds into the night. Meetings starting after 8 pm have increased 16% year-over-year!

Some of this is logistical - a 35% increase in cross-time-zone meetings creates scheduling issues. Yet the majority of it is cultural. It's "digital creep”: the unspoken belief that being online = being productive.

The Hidden Cost: Why We Can’t Just “Power Through”

1. The Productivity Paradox

There is an illusion of productivity that comes with the infinite workday. When our team is answering emails at 10 pm, they aren't doing deep work or strategic thinking - they’re treading water. This reactive communication damages attention spans, meaning the actual work takes longer to complete during the day.

2. The Burnout Cost

Workplace burnout is a risk. As noted by Inc., losing a high-performing employee to burnout impacts overall productivity much more than the temporary gain of a late-night email response.

3. The Talent Gap

The workforce is changing. Gen Z is more present, and they’re looking for employers who respect boundaries. If your company gives off the vibe that hustle culture means no personal life, we’ll struggle to attract and retain this generation of talent.

4 Ways to Stop the Bleed

Culture flows down. If we want to stop the infinite workday and respect employees’ boundaries, we have to take the lead.

1. Leverage Technology to Protect Time

Rely on your settings.

  • The "Scheduled Send Rule”: Use the Schedule Send feature to ensure your late-night emails land in inboxes at 8 am the next morning instead of 9 pm that night.

  • Quiet Hours: Encourage your team to use the Do Not Disturb settings on Slack, Teams. etc. during off-hours and make it clear that responses aren’t expected after a certain time.

2. Audit Meetings

A major driver of the infinite workday is that employees spend their core hours in back-to-back meetings, forcing them to do their actual work at night.

  • Audit: Look at your recurring meetings. If a meeting does not have a clear agenda or a decision that needs to be made, cancel it.

  • Compression: Can that 60-minute meeting be 30? Can that 30-minute meeting be an email? Give your team their days back so they don't have to borrow from their personal time.

3. Unplug from the Top

Your team will never truly rest if they believe we’re always watching.

  • Leave Loudly: When you sign off for the day or take a vacation, announce it - "I’m logging off for the evening and will not be checking my email." This gives your team permission to do the same without guilt.

4. Asynchronous Updates

For status updates, utilize shared documents or video messages that team members can easily digest during their working hours. This reduces the need for those 7 pm calls across time zones.

Train Your Team to Respect Time

You know the culture needs to change. You know your team needs to work smarter, prioritize better, and respect boundaries.

But we’re beyond busy running a business. We don't have time to research, design, and build a seminar on time management.

This is where GettaMeeting comes in.

At GettaMeeting, we believe leaders shouldn't have to choose between leading their business and training their team. We provide Fortune 500-caliber meeting modules that are ready to run with a click of a button.

If you’re fighting the infinite workday, we recommend starting with three modules:
